Shilpa Ray is an American singer-songwriter from Brooklyn, New York with a blues punk sound. Her music has been compared to Blondie, The Cramps and Screamin' Jay Hawkins and her singing has been compared to the style of Patti Smith, Nick Cave, and Ella Fitzgerald. Ray is notable for combining an Indian harmonium with a "big-voiced blues-rock howler" vocal approach. Her eponymous band signed a record contract with Northern Spy Records and has toured internationally.

Shilpa released her last album Teenage and Torture in 2011 on Knitting Factory Records and found her biggest fan in Nick Cave, who started telling music journalists she was his favorite current band. Then he hired her to sing backup on his spring 2013 Bad Seeds tour, and as main support for their autumn 2013 UK and Europe tour, to promote her new four-song EP It’s All Self Fellatio on his record label Bad Seed LTD. She currently works and plays with her four-piece band and is releasing her latest album Last Year’s Savage on May 19th 2015 on Northern Spy Records. | www.northernspyrecs.com/shilpa-ray
